In RO DBT, clients learn the concept of grieving the loss of expectations. While this is part of forgiveness work, it can be applied to other areas of life.

We expect things to go according to plan. We also hold beliefs that ourselves, others, and the world are fair, orderly, kind, and just. We may have expectations that others will validate us or not be outwardly critical.

When our expectations are not met, we feel a range of emotions, like sadness, hopelessness, anger, anxiety, and fear. Practice labelling your experience as unmet expectations, and take note of the emotions that you are facing. Acknowledge those emotions, and recognize that holding onto this hurt only hurts you more.

Below is a brief meditation to help you settle into the practice of grieving the loss of expectations.
